Before founding Country Cold Store, James D. Lewis worked as a Storekeeper and Purchaser at Grenada Beach Hotel. During his time there, he recognized a growing demand within his community for affordable poultry products.
Seeing an opportunity, he decided to begin selling chicken feet, which were in high demand and available at an attractive price. Recognizing his potential, the hotel’s poultry supplier—known as The Cold Store—offered James a 27-cubic-foot freezer on a “pay later” arrangement.
That single freezer marked the beginning of what would become one of Grenada’s most trusted food distribution companies.
As customer demand increased, James quickly realized that chicken feet alone were not enough. He expanded his inventory by adding chicken backs and other poultry products, giving customers more affordable choices while continuing to build trust throughout the community.
To reach even more customers, James personally promoted and sold his products at crossroads and village junctions throughout St. David. His dedication, hard work, and commitment to serving local families fueled rapid growth.
As the business expanded, additional freezers were purchased, larger inventories became possible, and a wholesale distribution network developed across Grenada before eventually extending to Carriacou.
